Welcome to another year and our favorite school tradition- Back to School Night. This year the kids made their own sack lunches again and loved trading their chips and treats. All through dinner they talked about all of the things they were excited about this year.
After our sack lunch, I read them a darling picture book, “The sloth that slowed us down”. We read how the family were trying to do everything so fast and this little sloth came to help them slow down and enjoy their time together. We decided that this year we would focus on that and “alone we go quickly, but together we go far”.
After our dinner, it’s tradition to go into our little school room and have Dad give us father’s blessings. This year I was blown away with the power of their blessings. Ava was blessed that there would be angels with her to help her read. I saw very clearly my Grandma Dessie (who was a teacher for many years) sitting beside her whispering in her ear.
Another favorite tradition of ours is always opening our Back to School books together. This year there were books about dinosaurs going to school, a dragon learning to fly, lessons on how to be a superhero, a very dangerous book for boys, being brave enough for two- and even a book on how to be a great Gator Dad!
For Back to School Night, Cash received the book, “What the dinosaurs did at school” and the kids thought it was the funniest thing. What we didn’t expect however, was for our own sneaky dinosaurs to come out of hiding the night before school and run amuck in our classroom.
When we walked in, there were dinosaurs sharpening pencils, flying, cutting and doing some extended research. Some dinosaurs (the girl ones) had gone through the drawers and accessorized with things like erasers and paper clips. There were even dinosaurs hanging from the ceiling fan!
It sure makes you wonder- what DO those dinosaurs do when we’re not around?
