November means a lot to me. Family and friends, learning with my crew and so many, many things to do. November means speeding up and getting as much sunshine in before our desert home turns cold. It means cuddling on the couch and visiting with friends. It's filled with falling leaves and sunshine and breeze. Here are some of my current November favorites:
Cuddling on the couch by the fireplace while we read. One of my favorite things about homeschool is teaching each of my children to read. It's now Cash's turn and he is loving every page. He doesn't have the desire to read as much as some of the others, but when I ask him to read he takes off and it makes my heart so happy. I could sit here and cuddle on the couch with him reading to me all day!
We've been learning about kingdoms and classifications in science and who knew Protista could elicit so many giggles from these kids?! Also, while learning about archaebacteria and eubacteria, we decided we need to take another field trip to Yellowstone to see the thermal sulphur pots again!
November in the desert also means that we are still outside enjoying the sunshine. Sometimes after school, we just need to be outside. Riding the bike trail by our house is one of our favorite times together.
Seeing the tipi set up in the backyard brings me happiness. Evenings in there by the fire with Chase and the kids are quickly becoming some of my favorite times together.
What's even better is when I can host the homeschool co-op mom's meeting in the tipi with all of my friends. I love these women so much and they make my life complete.
When we moved on to the fungi kingdom, the kids were excited due to all of the mushrooms we help dad find in the mountains. What I wasn't prepared for was how gross they'd find the fungi kingdom. It was hard not to giggle as I watched them squirm.

Sometimes things come up that quickly become my favorite. Today, Vance found a few tiny baby field mice in our rosemary bushes and wanted desperately to take care of them. His kind heart loves animals and babies so much that I just didn't have the heart to tell him that without their mama, they didn't have a good chance of making it.
I got him some gloves, a syringe and some water (as well as leaving nuts out to see if we could get the mama to come back) and let him nurse them as much as he could.
He documented all of the steps he took every minute, and I realized this may have been the very first time he wrote ANYTHING without being asked to. He abhors writing and complains that it physically hurts him so imagine my surprise (and my joy) when he did it all by himself. Thank you, teeny tiny field mice for getting my boy to want to write more. I will spare you the sad ending to their little mice tale. 😔
Co-op class on medicinal herbs. This couldn't have come at a better time! With everyone getting sick we loved our class on making our own herbal remedy for colds.
The kids were a big help and I'm looking forward to having this at our disposal this time of year!
One of my favorite things is what we call, "Friday Fun". We work hard all week to make sure we're getting all of our work done. If everyone has all of their work done by Friday, we take the afternoon and find a new place to go. Whether it's a new park, a place to eat, or (like today), a new puppy pet store to visit, we always have a good time!
And by the looks of things, it really is FALL! We only get fall leaves and colors for a few weeks during fall and so we really try to enjoy it.
That's one large leaf!
Fall also means family. One of my favorite things to do is get together with good friends who also happen to be family. This year the Shillig family got together and as you can see- whenever they're together lots of craziness will ensue.
Thank you, November for your soft light and big leaves. Thank you for bringing our family together and for fun learning adventures. Thank you, once again for being one f my favotites.
